MPS™ A2L Refrigerant Gas Sensor Brochure:

NevadaNano’s Molecular Property Spectrometer™ (MPS™) Refrigerant Gas Sensors provide accurate and reliable detection of refrigerants in existing and emerging applications. Whether you are converting refrigeration systems to mildly flammable low GWP A2L’s or to highly flammable A3’s or even proactively managing your A1 leaks, the MPS™ has best in class performance. MPS™’s 15+ year lifetime and the industry’s first no field calibration required, provides an attractive total cost of ownership.

The MPS™ platform is hardened to harsh environmental conditions including rapid transients that deliver the best performance with a very low false positive rate. With its extremely fast response time, the accurate sensor output is delivered in seconds. The sensor is immune to poisons and with built-in self-test functions, you are assured the MPS™ sensor is working within specification. The MPS™ comes in two different packaging options. The S4 is hardened for commercial ATEX certified applications, and the cost-effective Mini targets residential applications. Both packages meet the exact same performance standards and can be calibrated for any of the refrigerants listed below.

Features

  • Meets UL 60335-2-40 & ASHRAE
    15 requirements.
  • Wide environmental operating range with no cross-sensitivity to rapid T & RH changes.
  • No false positives.
  • 15+ year lifetime.
  • Extremely fast response time.
  • Built-in self-test for fail-safe operation.
  •  Immune to poisoning.

MPS™ A2L Refrigerant Gas Sensor Datasheet:

Overview

NevadaNano’s MPS™ A2L Refrigerant Gas Sensors enable accurate and reliable detection of mildly flammable (A2L) refrigerants common in HVAC applications. Sensor readings are output on a digital bus or configurable analog volt age output. With no field calibration required, the MPS™ A2L Refrigerant Gas Sensors deliver industry-leading performance and a low cost of ownership. NevadaNano offers three different sensors for three refrigerant gases: R-32, R454B, and R-454C. Sensors for new refrigerant gases are under development.

The MPS™ A2L Refrigerant Gas Sensors are available in two form factors: the “Mini” form factor, and the certified
“intrinsically safe” (IS) S4 form factor.

MPS™ A2L Refrigerant Gas Sensor User Manual:

How the MPS™ Flammable Gas Sensor Works

MPS™ Refrigerant Gas Sensors are smart sensors with built-in environmental compensation that detect and accurately quantify low-global-warming (LGW), flammable (A2L), and non-flammable (A1) refrigerants used in HVAC applications. They are robust, extremely poison resistant, and come factory calibrated. Sensor readings are output on a Universal Asynchronous Receiver and Transmitter (UART) digital bus or industry-standard analog output. Each type of refrigerant sensor is designed and calibrated to detect a single, specific refrigerant gas (e.g. R-32).
The MPS™ transducer is a micro-machined membrane with an embedded Joule heater and resistance thermometer. The MEMS transducer is mounted on a PCB and packaged inside a filtered enclosure that is permeable to ambient air. Presence of a refrigerant gas causes changes in the thermodynamic properties of the air/gas mixture; these properties are measured by the transducer and processed by patent-pending algorithms to report an accurate concentration.

Communicating with an MPS™ Refrigerant Gas Sensor

This section describes the software interface requirements for MPS™ Refrigerant Gas Sensors and is useful to system integrators when designing a sensor assembly into a final product. The preferred method of communicating with the sensor is over the serial interface using the UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter) protocol. Section 2.1 provides the necessary information for communicating using UART. Section 2.2 provides information for measuring sensor output via the analog voltage output pin.

MPS™ A2L Refrigerant Gas Sensor Evaluation Unit User Manual:

System Overview

The Molecular Property Spectrometer™ (MPS™) A2L Refrigerant Gas Sensor Evaluation Unit is a user-friendly sensor system developed for assessing refrigerant gas detection performance. The evaluation system is shown in Figure 1. The sensor’s pins connect to the provided evaluation PCB for communication with a PC (USB) or breakout to individual sensor signals (optional 5-wire harness). The sensor contains the MPS™ sensing element, environmental sensor, microprocessor, and supporting electronics. A quarter-turn plastic gas mask and housing is included to provide a sealed headspace above the sensor for test gas delivery.
